The Dairy System
The dairy system we use is welfare led. The calves are kept with their mothers until weaning at a minimum of three months, but sometimes up to six months, and we milk just once a day, early in the morning. A few days after giving birth the cows and their calves move out of the barn to graze on permanent pasture and nutritious herbal leys; a mix of legumes, herbs and minerals. This method ensures that the calves have what they need to grow strong and there is also plenty of delicious milk for bottling.
During the winter we stop milking and the cows are kept under cover in the warmth of the barn until their time comes to calve again.
