The Dairy System

With our micro-dairy system our calves are left with their mothers for several months as opposed to being removed within a few days as is typical in commercial dairies. This kind of approach has all round welfare and production benefits.

Milking takes place just once a day, early in the morning, ensuring the time the calves have to feed is maximized.  This method is shown to improve their performance and health.

As soon as the weather allows, the cows and their calves move out of the barn, to graze on permanent pasture and nutritious herbal leys; a mix of legumes, herbs and minerals. The forage provides the calves with what they need to grow strong and their mothers produce a generous amount of delicious milk.

After several months weaning gradually takes place.  Once fully weaned cows and calves ce-oexist in the same field with only an electric fence between them.

Its important to note that, in using methods that are different to those of commercial dairies, we are simply promoting an alternative system, which is not a criticism of other ways of production.
